Thonet began with the work of the cabinetmaker Michael Thonet, who opened his first workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. With delicate and elegant chairs, and by testing and applying novel woodworking techniques, Michael Thonet achieved more than just regional fame. In 1853, Michael Thonet renamed the company Gebrüder Thonet.
