Thonet began with the work of the cabinetmaker and carpenter Michael Thonet, who opened his first workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. With delicate and elegant chairs, and through the testing and application of innovative wood-processing techniques, Michael Thonet gained more than just regional recognition. In 1853, Michael Thonet renamed the company Gebrüder Thonet.
