A timeless design classic is the S 64 V chair, which the designer Marcel Breuer created in the late 1920s and which is arguably one of the best-known cantilever chairs of the 20th century today. Thonet has been producing this iconic chair, which is made from a solid chrome-plated tubular steel frame, comfortable cane webbing, and high-quality solid wood, since 1930. Thonet began with the work of the cabinetmaker and master builder Michael Thonet, who opened his first workshop in Boppard on the Rhine in 1819. With delicate and elegant chairs and the testing and application of novel woodworking techniques, Michael Thonet achieved more than just regional fame. In 1853, Michael Thonet renamed the company Gebrüder Thonet.
