Thonet began with the work of the cabinetmaker and carpenter Michael Thonet, who opened his first workshop in Boppard on the Rhine in 1819. With delicate and elegant chairs and the testing and application of novel woodworking techniques, Michael Thonet achieved more than just regional fame. In 1853, Michael Thonet renamed the company Gebrüder Thonet.
