For generations, the robust mountain sheep wool has come from local sheep farms. It impresses with its durability and excellent climate-regulating properties. To further refine the quality and softness of its products, Steiner1888 also processes fine wool fibers from other animals – including fine alpaca, merino, angora, and cashmere.

The production of loden at Steiner1888 involves around 40 meticulous steps, most of which are carried out by hand. It all begins with the selection of high-quality wool fibers from alpacas, merino sheep, cashmere goats, and local sheep. The raw wool is sorted, carded, dyed, and blended as needed before being spun into tear-resistant yarn. The base fabric for the loden cloth is then created on a loom.

The crucial step is fulling: Under the influence of moisture, soap, heat, and friction, the fabric felts, giving it its characteristic dense, warming structure. In the final finishing process, the material is roughened, sheared, and decongested with hot steam, resulting in softness, fluffiness, and shape retention.
