USM was founded in 1855 as a metalworking and locksmithing company, and its original factory buildings and headquarters are still located in Münsingen. The third generation of the Schärer family joined the company in 1961 with Paul Schärer. They subsequently developed a furniture system initially intended only for their production facilities, but it quickly gained popularity and attracted wider attention. In 1965, they applied for a patent for the ball joint. The furniture system was subsequently hailed as an icon of modern design and was included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2001.
