USM was founded in 1855 as a metalworking and locksmith business, and the factory buildings and company headquarters are still in Münsingen. The third generation, the Schärer family, joined the company in 1961 with Paul Schärer. They then developed a furniture system that was initially only intended for the production facilities and then more and more people became aware of it and wanted the same thing. In 1965, you applied for a patent for the ball joint. The furniture system was then presented as an icon of modern design and was included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2001.
