Thonet / S 43 / cantilever chair without armrest
Mart Stam removed the back legs of the chair, which had been designed according to similar principles for centuries. Through evolutionary refinement, the result is a piece of seating that cuts a fine figure in any place where understatement and quality are required. Mart Stam's furniture designs were based on high utility and economy, both aesthetically and materially. This results in the straight-line shape, the clear construction and the improved seating comfort. Stam achieved the greatest possible reduction in the S 43 cantilever chair by combining the tubular steel frame with molded wood parts for the seat and back. Its pure, restrained shape makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism.
