The world of furniture was brought back to life, and Milan was the epicenter of this exciting event. With over 361,000 visitors at the official Salone del Mobile 2024 alone and a multitude of interested people meandering through the city's showrooms, palazzi and villas, one thing is clear: the Salone del Mobile remains the largest and most important fair for furniture design in the world.
We at Architare were there and bring you the most important discoveries and trends.
The super trend: Sustainable craftsmanship
The times when furniture design only impressed with innovative forms are over. Nowadays, radicalness often lies in reduction and the demands placed on craftsmanship, materials and technology. A perfect example of this is the "Osuu" chair by Foster + Partners for Walter Knoll. Minimalist in its appearance, it impresses with hand-bent, filigree wooden elements and shows that true beauty often lies in simplicity.
The comeback of the 70s and their pop culture
Organic, soft shapes are back and are shaping current design trends. Particularly striking are the sofas that have no hard edges and are therefore real eye-catchers. One example of this is the "Dudet" design by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina, which impresses with its completely fabric-covered look.
The shapes and colors of a turbulent era
The commitment to the shapes of the 70s is not only evident in the designs, but also in the size of the furniture. Large foam sofas and long-fringed fur covers on armchairs and cushions dominate the picture. Materials such as colored marble, high-gloss varnish, leather, chrome and carpets complement this retro trend perfectly.
New shades at the Salone del Mobile 2024
One of the most striking colour palettes of the year comes from Gucci, whose "Design Ancora" project featured furniture in deep wine red. But earthy, dry tones like terracotta were also seen everywhere, for example in Baxter's impressive "House of Clay".
The Miracle of Milan: Not only the big ones make it
One of the most valuable aspects of the Salone del Mobile is the opportunity it gives young designers to showcase themselves. Alongside established brands, emerging talents also had the chance to show their creations, either at the Salone Satellite or in various exhibitions spread across the city.
Milan was once again the center of the design world, and the trends and discoveries at Salone del Mobile 2024 promise an exciting future for furniture design and craftsmanship.
